One I keep coming back to
Untitled — Personal Favorite

Untitled — Personal Favorite

Subject looks away from the key light and smiles while the rear flash is visible behind him, shining toward the lens and creating a distinctive flare.

Photographer's personal favorite. Key visual element: rear flash shining toward camera while subject looks away from main light and smiles. Flare and layered lighting create unusual nighttime portrait with spontaneous, atmospheric quality.

The Story

I had been wanting to do a shoot with my suitemate for a while. Then finals ended, everyone was finally free, and I thought: this is the perfect way to end the semester.

What I like most about The Quiet Hour is that it was never meant to be a perfectly controlled studio production. It started with me asking my suitemate if he wanted to take some pictures, turned into an outfit discussion, and eventually became a late-night experiment with three Godox flashes, a new camera, a new flash, two outfits, multiple locations, and two photographers taking turns trying things. I got to experiment with flash power, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, light placement, and the relationship between artificial light and nighttime ambient light. More importantly, I got to see how much you can create with a relatively simple setup when you are willing to experiment. The shoot gave me a chance to try a category of photography I had been wanting to explore, while also becoming one of my first real creative projects with the A7 IV. It was a fun way to end the semester: go outside at night, bring way too much lighting equipment, take what feels like a million photographs, move around until something works, and figure things out as we go. And honestly, that's probably why I enjoyed it so much.
